KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Take cover, fans.
Rory McIlroy is now on the tee.
A month after plunking a fan on the head at the Open Championship, the Northern Irishman again sailed his tee shot into the gallery Thursday at the PGA Championship.
If you recall, during the opening round at Royal Lytham, McIlroy’s tee shot on the 15th hole hit a teenager on the head and unfortunately kicked out of bounds, leading to a double bogey. After the incident, McIlroy and his management team arranged to have the kid and his friend stay in a nearby hotel.
This time, McIlroy badly pulled his 4-iron tee shot on the difficult par-3 17th at Kiawah Island. His ball hit a woman on the hip, but it ricocheted off her and into a greenside waste area. He splashed out to 4 feet, sank the par putt, and ran back to give the woman the ball. He eventually shot 5-under 67 and is one shot off the early lead at the PGA.
Said McIlroy, sheepishly, “Yeah, it’s becoming a habit hitting people in majors, so I’ll try not to do that again.”
