Injury forces Garcia to WD from British Open qualifier

It wasn’t so long ago that Sergio Garcia seemed destined to someday become a British Open champion. Now he's struggling just to get into the field.
Garcia withdrew from Monday’s qualifier at Gleneagles CC in Plano, Texas, after five holes, citing an infected fingernail on his left hand.
“Couldn't hold the club comfortably,” he posted to his Twitter account after withdrawing. “Hopefully I'll be fine for Thursday at the Nelson! Sorry guys.”
Currently No. 73 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Garcia still has a few ways of getting into this year’s field at Royal St. Georges. He could enter a qualifier Sunningdale GC in Berkshire, England, on June 6; he could rise to the top-50 in the world by next Monday, which would likely require a victory at this week’s Byron Nelson Championship; or he could be the top player (inside the top-five) not already qualified at either Open de France or the Scottish Open.
Garcia hasn’t missed an Open start since 1998 and has competed in 47 consecutive major championships -- a streak which may be broken prior to the British Open, since he has yet to qualify for next month’s U.S. Open, either.
