Island hole looking meaner

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – With the winds finally up Sunday at The Players Championship, the 17th island hole is looming as a potential factor in today’s finish.

One in about four tee shots is getting wet so far.

Six of the first 25 players through have dunked shots with the pin in its traditional back-right placement. The winds are gusting into players and from their left. Though the hole is playing just 137 yards today, it ranks as the third most difficult hole so far. Brett Quigley, Woody Austin, Troy Merritt, Alvaro Quiros, Dustin Johnson and John Merrick are wet there so far.

Just five balls were hit into the water in Saturday's third round, though Heath Slocum hit one of them, leading to a double bogey that pushed him down the leaderboard.

Through the first three rounds, just 20 balls have been hit into the water there. Three years ago, 81 balls were hit into the water through three rounds.
