Following two missed cuts and a MC-DNF at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, the three-time PGA Tour winner is going back to basics with his swing.
“[Swing coach] Adam [Schriber] and I have just been trying to work on what beginners work on – grip, posture, setup, tempo, all the fundamentals,” he said while working on the TPC Sawgrass driving range one day before the start of this week’s Players Championship. “I was just trying to put band-aid on top of band-aid instead of fixing what I needed to fix. It‘s stuff I had to fix out here before I could go make it work.”
Kim maintained that recent poor performances – he owns one top-30 finish in his last 10 starts – have been a result of uncertainty in his swing and a lack of confidence.
“If I shoot 36 swinging it bad, I’d rather shoot 37 swinging it good, because I know it’s there,” he said. “When I shoot 36, I’m making four 15-footers for par in nine holes. I really don’t know what’s going on. It’s like throwing dice – I’m just trying to get lucky. It’s not skill. But it comes down to the fact that I know I’m getting closer every time I play golf. So hopefully it’s on a course in a field like this. Like I said, I’m so close. It’s just a matter of putting it together.”
