This is the final week to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs, so the intensity is ratcheted up for those players around the top 125 cutoff.
A few of the guys on the bubble were asked their thoughts heading into this week’s Wyndham Championship, the last regular-season event of the season:
Jerry Kelly (No. 120 in FedEx Cup points): “I know I have to compete this week. You know, I have to play well. I could easily get passed this week. … It’s always right in front of my brain. There’s no way for me to put things like that out of my mind. You know, when it comes down to it, you just got to perform.”
Jhonattan Vegas (No. 124): “It is on your mind the whole time. Every shot you hit, you know that you’re 124 and you have to make it the next week but, at the same time, I decided to make it fun. … Things move so quick in here that when you’re just worrying about I’m 124, 125, you can really lose what you’re doing here.”
Brendan Steele (No. 126): “It’s a huge factor. The playoffs really start this week. … It takes care of itself if you play well. It’s a little bit of inconvenience. Unfortunately, as well, I’m one of the guys whose money list number is a lot better than my FedEx Cup number. That’s always kind of aggravating, yeah. But hopefully I can play well this week and get myself going.”
Heath Slocum (No. 129): “It’s there so you can’t avoid it. I’m trying to play well this week regardless. So I figure if I play well then it will take care of itself. … It’s kind of been one of those years where I haven’t gotten everything together. I feel like I’m close, but I’m going to have to have some things go my way.”
Gary Woodland (No. 130): “I’m not too concerned about it. I’m happy to be healthy, finally healthy this year. I did some great things last week. Butch and I put in a lot of work the last two weeks. I want to come out here and play well this week. … I’m out here trying to get the game back.”
