Living the high life: It's good to be Jordan Spieth

WINDERMERE, Fla. – Life is good for Jordan Spieth. His upcoming itinerary looks like it was pulled straight from a buddy-trip manual.

On Tuesday, the University of Texas sophomore wrapped up a fifth-place finish at the Isleworth Collegiate, played at the exclusive Isleworth Golf & Country Club, Tiger Woods’ old home course. Next week, on the other side of the country, he and his Longhorns teammates will compete in the inaugural, eight-team Cypress Invitational, to be held at – yep, that’s right – Cypress Point Club, one of the most awe-inspiring layouts in the world.

It gets better, potentially, even if the scenery doesn’t.

Spieth is exempt into the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School (Nov. 13-16), by virtue of his made cut at this year’s U.S. Open. (He earned low-medalist honors, finishing T-21.) He will play the event as an amateur, meaning he could return to school even if he doesn’t advance, but the 19-year-old may opt to turn pro anyway.

As for the state of his game, Spieth is still tinkering with his swing, working on getting “more loaded” onto his back leg and flattening his backswing.

He conceded Tuesday that Q-School was “on my mind a lot,” which may explain why this semester he made frequent trips back home to Dallas to see his instructor, Cameron McCormick.

“I was here to play golf for Texas in the fall,” Spieth said, “(so) this wasn’t just about getting ready for Q-School. If I can become a better player this fall and help my team out, I’ll be more prepared for Q-School.

“Texas golf was first and foremost this fall, and once that ends next week, then I’ll start focusing on the other stuff.”
