CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It wasnt the ending Rory McIlroy had hoped for on his birthday week, but he knows that the Wells Fargo title went to a deserving champion.
I think it was just a matter of time before (Rickie Fowler) won, McIlroy said.
McIlroy fell to Fowler on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after he failed to convert his 33-foot putt at the 18th. McIlroy and D.A. Points made pars, while Fowler knocked in a 4-footer for birdie.
It was great to see, especially the way he played that playoff hole, McIlroy said. He played to win. He deserved it after that birdie.
All is not lost for McIlroy, who again ascends to the worlds No. 1 spot with his T-2 finish at Quail Hollow.
Thats nice, he said. Its a little consolation.
