Mickelson spotted at Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Phil Mickelson hasn't teed it up for the season opener in Hawaii for several years but it doesn't stop the world's No. 2 player from vacationing here. Local hoteliers report that Mickelson spent two weeks at Kapalua just after the Thanksgiving holiday. He and his family were spotted in restaurants and on the beach, throwing the football and bronzing in the Maui sun. Phil and Amy were married at Kapalua and regularly visit the area with their children.

In other news. . .

Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy came without his family this year because his wife Julie is home in Scottsdale, Ariz., awaiting the birth of the couple's third child. She is due Jan. 15 and Geoff told me he doesn't know the sex of the child.

Heath Slocum knows his next is a baby girl. The Slocums are expecting their second child Jan. 17 so he will skip next week's Sony Open to head back to Atlanta for the big occasion.

Matt Kuchar also calls the Atlanta area home and is a proud product of Georgia Tech but the ever faithful Yellow Jacket will be sporting an Iowa Hawkeye head cover this week. Before Tuesday's Orange Bowl matchup between Georgia Tech and Iowa, Kuchar made a bet with Iowan Zach Johnson that the loser would have to don the opposing team's head cover during competition at the SBS Championship.
