A day after missing out on a chance to lead the European Ryder Cup team for a second time, Colin Montgomerie threw his support behind the man that was chosen, Paul McGinley.
"We will get behind Paul now and wish him well," the Scot told the BBC Wednesday. "I'm not at all disappointed."
Montgomerie, who won the 2010 Ryder Cup as a non-playing captain with McGinley serving as one of his vice captains, was revealed as one of the five finalists under consideration by the selection committee on Tuesday. While he was quick to applaud the choice of McGinley, he also indicated the chance to captain the squad again at Gleneagles in his native Scotland might have been especially memorable.
"It would have been a dream come true, but it has not happened," he explained. "I was very flattered even to be considered again - it meant a lot to me."
Recently elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame, Montgomerie made it clear that he felt the committee made a strong choice in selecting the genial Irishman who sunk the winning putt at the Ryder Cup in 2002.
"The selection process was such that they appointed the best man for the job," he noted. "I appointed him (McGinley) for the Seve Trophy and he did a very good job - as he did twice as a (Ryder Cup) vice captain."
Montgomerie continued to extoll the virtues of McGinley, while also indicating a desire to help the home team in an event he participated in eight times as a player before captaining.
"He's a very good man-manager and very good at assessing people's strengths," he said of the Irishman. "I will be there to support and fly the flag for Europe."
