Memphis is the way to Pebble Beach for Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington.
While many players, including the top two players in the world, have chosen to sit out this week to get their game in shape on the range or by getting up to the U.S. Open early, these three shoe-ins for the European Ryder Cup team are banking on competitive rounds for their major preparation. So far in Tennessee, all three players look to be in good form.
“It’s a tough test,” McIlroy said. “It’s good preparation for the U.S. Open, tough conditions. You gotta hit the ball well, you gotta drive it in the fairway. You gotta put yourself in good position on the greens.”
And McIlroy is doing just that. He’s in contention entering the weekend coming off rounds of 69-66.
“You can play as much as you want or practice as much as you want, but once you get a card in your hand it’s a different feeling. Nothing can prepare you for the weekend of a major. When you’re in contention that’s the best way is to be hitting shots under pressure.”
