Morgan Pressel won the Japan LPGA Tour’s Salonpas Cup event at Ibaraki Golf Club in Tsukubamirai Sunday for her third title as a professional.
Pressel closed with a 2-under-par 70 to defeat a field that included Ai Miyazato, the No. 3 player in the world and already a three-time winner this LPGA season, and Yani Tseng, the world’s No. 4.
Pressel, 21, the only American in the field, finished at 9-under 279, three shots better than Sakura Yokomine and five better than Tseng. Miyazato tied for sixth, nine shots back.
The LPGA schedule resumes Thursday at the Bell Micro Classic at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Ala. Pressel will join a field there loaded with the top LPGA players, including new world No. 1 Jiyai Shin, Miyazato, Tseng, Cristie Kerr and Michelle Wie. Pressel’s first LPGA title came at the Kraft Nabisco in 2007 and her second at the Kapalua LPGA Classic in ’08.
