Rose enters Tour Championship with right frame of mind

Justin Rose

ATLANTA – At No. 24 on the FedEx Cup points list, Justin Rose came into the Tour Championship in the right frame of mind.

“It's a position of having nothing to lose, really,” he said after an opening-round 4-under 66 to grab a share of the lead with Tiger Woods. “Obviously, I'd like to be much higher up the rankings. … Last year I didn't factor in the tournament, and this year maybe being a little bit looser out there is going to help me. I think I've only got this tournament on my mind.

“A lot of the other guys have two trophies on their minds. So I think I'll steal it if I end up winning both of them.”

Following a round that included six birdies against just two bogeys, Rose is currently in third place on the projected standings. He knows, though, that a player can win it from his position, having witnessed Bill Haas earn the title from the 25th spot last year.

“If I keep it on the fairway, I feel my iron game and short game is coming around,” he added. “I'm beginning to get some confidence with the putter. So it was nice to get out of today with a hot start.”
