Love on Ryder Cup: 'It's not a war, it's a party'

MEDINAH, Ill. – There is no chance this will become another War by the Shore. The Ryder Cup, it seems, has grown beyond the contentiousness of the 1991 matches but that doesn’t mean the event is too “kissy, kissy, hug, hug,” as Steve Elkington opined on Twitter this week.
Just ask Ian Poulter, the European team’s fiery soul. “There’s something about the Ryder Cup which kind of intrigues me how you can be great mates with somebody, but boy you want to kill them in the Ryder Cup,” he said on Wednesday.
Since the ’91 matches, however, captains on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean have tried to tone down the rhetoric while maintaining their team’s competitive edge.
“It’s not a war, it’s a party,” U.S. captain Davis Love III said. “Do we want to pummel them, of course. But it’s a golf match. We will get chippy but it will be respectful.”
