Pistorius murder charge 'shocks' countryman Schwartzel

Charl Schwartzel

LOS ANGELES – South African athletes are as flabbergasted as the rest of world with news that the country’s history making Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend.

Pistorius, the first amputee to run in the Olympics, was formally charged Friday.

“I don't know him at all,” South African Charl Schwartzel said after posting a 4-under-par 67 Friday to get into contention at the Northern Trust Open.  “I've never met him, just seen what he's done, as an athlete. I've got no idea what he's like as a person, or anything about his personal life. So, I mean, it's a shock. He's a South African legend, and it's hard to see.”
