Simpson's been rolling the rock since childhood

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The fact that Webb Simpson’s taken such a giant step up in class vying for PGA Tour Player of the Year honors in his third season doesn’t surprise William McGirt.

Though McGirt was six years older than Simpson growing up in North Carolina, he was well aware of Simpson’s potential watching him in junior golf.

In fact, when Simpson was just 8, McGirt remembers wandering over to him on a practice putting green during an American Junior Golf Association event.

“He could really putt,” McGirt said. “I remember going up to him and asking him if he could give me a putting lesson. `Sure,’ he says, `Let me show you how it's done.' And then he drops a ball about 40 feet from the cup and rolls it in. I tossed my putter in the air and said, `OK, I’m done.’”

And, no, Simpson didn’t have a long putter back then.
