Singh back in the hunt at The Barclays

Vijay Singh

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Vijay Singh has been here before.

Just last month, he finished T-9 at the Open Championship, then T-7 at the Canadian Open one week later, and he was in contention halfway through the PGA Championship before faltering on the weekend.

Singh keeps knocking on the door for his 35th career PGA Tour victory and first in four years and that door appears to be wide open once again going into the final 36 holes at The Barclays.

“I think I'm playing as good as I did any part of my career,” he said after a second-round 4-under 67. “I'm hitting the ball as long. I'm hitting the ball straighter. I feel a lot of confidence in me. It's just I need to get some kind of momentum going to keep me going.”

At 49, Singh hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down. He’s made the cut in 17 of 21 starts this season and even though he’ll be eligible for the Champions Tour in February, he’s hardly thinking about going that route.

“I'm playing as good as anybody out here, so if I can keep doing this and if the desire is still there and fire is still there, I'm going to keep playing here,” he explained. “I think if I lose the edge over here, I don't know if I'm going to even go and play the Champions Tour. But I feel good about myself, my health, my strength and my golf game. As long as all of them act normally, I think I'll be OK.”

It was noted that Singh often plays well late in the year, winning the FedEx Cup in 2008 and again sparking a late-season rally this time around. When pressed for an explanation, the veteran range rat coolly said, “I guess I just outwork everybody else.”

His hard work is working so far again this week.
