Stasi, Waynick advance to Women's Mid-Amateur final

Meghan Stasi and Liz Waynick both won two matches Wednesday to advance to the final of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Tex.

The 34-year-old Stasi, from Oakland Park, Fla., defeated Andrea Kraus in her morning quarterfinal match, 2 and 1, and went on to win her afternoon semifinal over Laura Coble, 6 and 5. Waynick, 52, from Scottsdale, Ariz., eliminated 2004 champion Corey Weworski in the quarterfinals, 2 and 1, and won her semifinal match over Stacy Dennis in 20 holes.

With a win Thursday, Stasi would join elite company. Having already won this event in 2006, 2007 and 2010, she would become only the 16th person in USGA history to win the same championship at least four times. She would also join Ellen Port as the only other four-time champion of the Women's Mid-Amateur.

Early in the week, it appeared that Stasi's run would be a brief one. In her second-round match on Tuesday, she found herself five down with only six holes to play against Lynne Cowan. Stasi staged an improbable rally, though, ultimately winning the match in 21 holes to keep her championship dreams alive.

Thursday's 18-hole final will begin at 8 a.m. CDT.
