CROMWELL, Conn. – Amid the delays and torrid finish at Bethpage on Sunday and Monday the golf community suffered a loss on Sunday.
The wife of longtime Tour player Chris Smith was killed in a crash late Sunday on Interstate-69 near Fort Wayne, Ind., and his two children were badly injured.
“When something like this happens, like Ken Green’s accident, it makes you cherish what you have,” Stewart Cink said. “You don’t want to let a moment go by.”
At this week’s Nationwide Tour event in West Virginia officials are passing out black ribbons and caddie bibs with Smith’s name on them. Some of Smith’s closest friends have requested bibs with “Smitty” on them.
The tour also plans to distribute stickers with the No. 15 on them. Smith, one of the circuit’s most likeable players, contends you’re not an athlete unless you wear a number and he picked 15.
“The entire Nationwide Tour is in mourning,” Gavin Coles said.
The Nationwide Tour is also honoring Skip Kendall’s mother, Shirley, who passed away last week in Arizona following a car accident.
