At first glance the leaderboard at the Quail Hollow Championship may have you doing a double take. But taking a closer look maybe we can rationalize some of the eclectic names on the first page.
A breakthrough winner last year, Bo Van Pelt finished T-3 in his last start on Tour at the Verizon Heritage and he tied for sixth at Quail Hollow back in 2006.
Long hitter Bubba Watson tied for second last year in Charlotte and less than two months ago he finished solo third at the Transitions Championship.
Forty-five-year-old Paul Goydos hasn’t seen much success since his T-5 at the Northern Trust Open, but it was just two years ago at this time of year when he dueled for the Players Championship title against Sergio Garcia.
Forty-three-year-old Billy Mayfair has a pair of top-10s in Charlotte and Aussie Rod Pampling finished T-8 in 2008. His countryman Geoff Ogilvy captured the first title of the season, the SBS Championship, and has two ties for 10th in Charlotte that came in 2006 and 2004.
Maybe the most surprising thing on Page 1 of the leaderboard is that we don’t see Tiger Woods’ name. He battled his way back on his second nine after falling to 4 over par. But finished with a 74 in Round 1 and is well off the lead.
