Thompson to make 2012 LPGA debut in Australia

Lexi Thompson

Lexi Thompson plans to make her LPGA debut as a tour member at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne Golf Club Feb. 9-12.

Thompson will tee it up as a 16-year-old in her first start as a rookie but finish the event as a 17-year-old. Her birthday falls in the second round on Feb. 10. Thompson became the youngest winner in LPGA history when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic at 16 years, 7 months and 8 days old. She’s also the youngest player in tour history to be granted a waiver of the LPGA rule requiring members be at least 18 years old.

Thompson, according to her agent, Bobby Kreusler, will actually make her 2012 debut a week before the Women’s Australian Open. She is scheduled to tee it up at the RACV Ladies Masters in Queensland, Australia. That's not an LPGA-sanctioned event. After two weeks in Australia, she's scheduled to go to the Honda LPGA Thailand to finish off a run of three consecutive events. As of now, however, she’s not planning to play for a fourth straight week at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.

“We haven’t finalized the schedule, but it seems like that might be too much,” Kreusler said. “She is still in school.”

Thompson, who is home-schooled, is scheduled to graduate high school in May of next year.
