Three share lead atop crowded Tampa leaderboard

The leaders fell back to the pack Saturday at Innisbrook, allowing several players to move back into contention with only 18 holes to go. Here’s a glance at the situation heading into Sunday at the Tampa Bay Championship, where a trio of golfers sits atop a crowded leaderboard:

The leaderboard: Kevin Streelman (-6), Justin Leonard (-6), George Coetzee (-6), Greg Chalmers (-5), Jim Furyk (-5), Ben Kohles (-5), Tag Ridings (-5)

What it means: With the leaders largely struggling Saturday, a litany of players held at least a share of the lead at some point during the third round. At the end of the day, three were left at 6 under, as the slick greens on the Copperhead Course caused the leading score to remain the same after 54 holes as it was after 18 holes.

Round of the day: Streelman began the day seven shots off the pace, but after a bogey-free 65 he now takes a share of the lead into the final round. Streelman opened his round with a birdie and added three more from holes 10-13, making six in total en route to carding the day’s lowest round by two shots.

Best of the rest: After treading water for the first two rounds, defending champion Luke Donald played his way back into the tournament with a bogey-free 67. One of three players to shoot 67 Saturday along with Leonard and Furyk, Donald carded four birdies during his third round and now will begin play Sunday at 4 under, just two shots off the pace.

Biggest disappointment: Adam Scott. After a bogey-free 66 Friday put the Aussie into the final pairing, he needed 10 more shots to complete his round Saturday. Five bogeys across his first 10 holes led to a 5-over 76 for Scott, dropping him out of the top 20 on a day when low scores were not exactly scarce. Twice a winner previously on this course, K.J. Choi also fell out of contention after equaling Scott's 5-over 76 Saturday.

Main storyline heading into Sunday: With 12 players starting the final round within two shots of the lead, this event remains up for grabs. Coetzee and Streelman both enter Sunday seeking their first career PGA Tour win, while Leonard hasn’t won in nearly five years. An invite to the Masters may also be in the balance; only three (Coetzee, Furyk, Donald) among the top 12 are already in the field for the season’s first major next month.

Shot of the day: After his drive on the 16th hole ran through the fairway, Ridings was left with a tricky shot from the left rough that had to negotiate some nearby trees. His punch approach from 169 yards missed the neighboring pines though, barely carrying the greenside bunker before rolling to within seven feet of the pin.

I just wanted to make the cut.” – Coetzee, who is playing this week on a sponsor’s exemption and now shares the 54-hole lead despite beginning his opening round Thursday with three straight bogeys.
