Tiger rights ship, posts 3-under 67

Tiger Woods

ATLANTA – Of the litany of statistics one could dissect for Tiger Woods’ third round at the Tour Championship – 6 of 14 fairways hit, 13 of 18 greens in regulation, 29 putts – it was his ability to turn bad shots into pars that separated Saturday’s 67 from Friday’s 73.

Woods finished tied for sixth in scrambling, saving par four times out of his five misses including an adventurous 16th hole after he fanned his drive into the trees right of the fairway.

After his roping approach clipped a tree Woods hit his third shot to 11 feet and converted the par putt.

“That was big,” said Woods, who is tied for seventh at 4 under, four strokes off the lead. “If the leaders got a birdie coming in and I dropped a shot there that’s six strokes . . .”

Instead, Woods’ quest for PGA Tour title No. 4 in 2012 and his third FedEx Cup crown still has life.

“It’s still going to take a round in the 60s, (but) guys aren’t going to run off and hide on this golf course,” Woods said.
