Tiger struggling before play suspended

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Tiger Woods’ weekend woes continue in the major championships this year.

For maybe the first time in his career, Woods gave away two of his golf gloves on a single hole to fans he hit or scared with errant shots.

With so many players making charges Saturday at the PGA Championship, Woods moved the other way, making three bogeys over his first seven holes before play was halted because of bad weather.

Tied for the lead at day’s start, Woods left the course five shots behind Rory McIlroy and Vijay Singh.

“I got off to a rough start today and couldn’t get anything going,” Woods said. “I’ll come back tomorrow morning and see what happens. There are a lot of holes left to play.”

Woods got himself into contention at the U.S. Open and the British Open in the last two majors, but he derailed in weekend swoons. He hasn’t broken par on the weekend in a major this year and isn’t heading in that direction on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course.

Just about every facet of Woods’ game was misfiring early in the third round. His putter failed him at the third hole when he missed a 4-footer for birdie. At the fourth, he hooked a 3-wood drive into the crowd, giving away a golf glove to a man he hit there. He then hooked his approach, missing the green left, where he gave away another glove to a child, who may or may not have been thumped by the errant shot.

Woods missed left and right with his drives, hitting just three of six fairways. He was off with his irons, too, hitting just three of eight greens, with too many approaches from the rough, or awkward sandy lies. His short game didn’t bail him out. All three of his bogeys came after he failed to get up and down.

Woods was tied for the lead on Saturday at the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in June, but he stumbled to a 75. He was in contention Sunday at Royal Lytham & St. Annes last month when he made triple bogey at the sixth hole and played his way out of contention.
