CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson may have started the day well out of contention but the two did put on a show Saturday morning at Quail Hollow Club.
From No. 13 through 16 the two combined for seven birdies and both finished with 68 and are tied at 5 under. For Lefty, Round 3 was his best putting effort of the week, needing just 28 putts on a card that was marred by a bogey at the last.
Mickelson began the birdie run for the high-profile twosome, which teed off in the day’s second group at 8:04 a.m., with a 28 footer at the 13th and the duo matched birdies for the next three holes, but given the conditions and a frontrunner (Nick Watney) that was a touchdown clear, Lefty didn’t sound like a man with high expectations for Sunday.
“We got lucky to have kind of soft conditions and opportunities to go low,” Mickelson said. “Had I made two, three more birdies you just never know because I think it’s going to be tough for the leaders to get away unless the rain coming in or it stays calm.”
