Westwood will have new look at The Barclays

Lee Westwood

The new-look Lee Westwood will arrive at next week’s Barclays with a different coach and caddie, although his manager told GTC that new looper Mike Kerr is more than just a random “temp.”

“(Kerr) was his No. 2 choice when Billy (Foster) got the job, so pretty good,” said International Sports Management chief Chubby Chandler.

Chandler said Foster, Westwood’s longtime bagman who was injured preparing for a charity soccer match prior to the Wells Fargo Championship, will not be healthy enough to work again until next year.

After missing the cut at last week’s PGA Championship, Westwood split with swing coach Pete Cowen and replacement caddie Michael Waite.

At last month’s Open Championship, Cowen told GTC that Westwood’s slow summer – he posted just a single top 10 since June’s U.S. Open – was the result of a “lack of stability,” and he was confident the world No. 4 would “get it back.”

But last week’s result was just the second time since 2008 that Westwood had missed the cut at a major. According to Chandler, Westwood was unhappy with the amount of time he could spend with Cowen, whose stable includes Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen, and that the Englishman has already begun working with a new short-game coach.
