MARANA, Ariz. – Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano will try to make this week’s meeting with Tiger Woods a little more memorable.
Fernandez-Castano and Woods have never played together. Curious, on Monday at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, I asked Fernandez-Castano if shaking hands with Woods before their match Wednesday will mark the first time he meets Woods.
“No,” Fernandez-Castano said. “We had breakfast together at Akron. We chatted. He was very friendly, but he probably doesn’t remember it.”
That was back in 2009.
Woods was asked Tuesday if he has ever met Fernandez-Castano. Woods said he has seen him on driving ranges, even watched him win a playoff in Australia, but . . .
“I don’t think I’ve ever met him,” Woods said. “But I’ve seen him quite a few times over the years in Europe.”
