Woods finishes stronger than in 2010 Chevron

Tiger Woods

A year after Tiger Woods lost a four-shot lead and a sudden-death playoff to Graeme McDowell in the Chevron World Challenge, the 14-time major winner came from one shot behind to defeat Zach Johnson by a shot for his first win in two years.

Woods carded a 3-under 69 on this Sunday at Sherwood CC, including birdies on the final two holes.

His final-round score this year was four shots better than a year ago.

Woods began the final round a stroke behind Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, who holed out for eagle on his final shot Saturday. Both players made birdie at the second hole, but Johnson made bogeys at the third and fourth holes to give Woods a one-shot lead.

In 2010, Woods opened with two bogeys in the first three holes. He offset those with birdies at the par-5 second and then the fifth.

It was McDowell who came out blazing, making three birdies in the first five holes. The gap had dropped to just a shot before the round was one-third complete.

Woods went out in even-par 36 both years, but the trio of back-nine par-5s at Sherwood helped to decide the tournament. A year ago, Woods played the three holes in 2 over, including a double bogey at the 13th.

This year, Woods played that stretch in 1 under par.
