You Oughta Know: Tiger takes Farmers lead into Monday

SAN DIEGO – After fog delays set up a marathon day of golf Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger Woods used the opportunity to rekindle images of his past dominance, extending his lead to six shots by nightfall. Here are some items You Oughta Know heading into Monday, where Woods will look to win his eighth professional event at Torrey Pines:

• When previously taming the South Course, Woods has not just won – he's been dominant. Six prior Farmers titles have come with an average margin of victory of 3.17 strokes, highlighted by 2008 when he set a tournament record with his 8-stroke win over Ryuji Imada. Up by six shots with 11 holes left to play Monday, there is reason to think that average will only be on the rise.

• Should Woods go on to win Monday, this will become the third PGA Tour event that he has won seven times in his career, having already accomplished the feat at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. For perspective, Woods' win total in any of those three events would equal the career PGA Tour win totals of Dustin Johnson, Retief Goosen and Geoff Ogilvy, as all three have seven PGA Tour wins to their credit.

• When Woods starts his year with a win, it usually bodes well for the season ahead. In the previous six seasons where he has begun his PGA Tour season with a victory, Woods has gone on to win an average of 6.16 times per season. Five of those six years also included a major championship, with 2003 being the lone outlier where Woods won at Torrey Pines but failed to take home won of golf's four biggest prizes.

• Despite his unparalleled record of success at this event, Woods has only held the 54-hole lead for three of his six prior Farmers wins. The most recent occurrence was 2008, when his eight-shot lead after three rounds set a tournament record and proved to be his ultimate margin of victory.

• Players hoping for Woods to falter down the stretch Monday may not want to know how exceedingly rare it is for him to struggle at this venue. Having now played 50 rounds at Torrey Pines in this event, Woods has only been over par for a round three times. In fact, 43 of his 50 previous rounds have been below par, with 34 of them in the 60s. Already 3 under through seven holes of his final round, it appears unlikely any of those trends will change Monday.
