You Oughta Know: Women's Open and The Greenbrier

KOHLER, Wis. – The U.S. Women’s Open was all about Na Yeon Choi Saturday at Blackwolf Run.

Some notes and nuggets to whet your appetite before the final round:

• Na Yeon Choi’s 7-under-par 65 Saturday at Blackwolf Run ranks among the best rounds in the history of the U.S. Women’s Open. Only four players have posted better scores in the 67 years the championship has been played.

• Here are the only players who have posted better scores than Choi posted Saturday:

Helen Alfredsson – 63, first round, Indianwood Golf & Country Club, Lake Orion, Mich., 1994.

Kelli Kuehne – 64, first round, Old Waverly Golf Club, West Point, Miss., 1999.

Lorie Kane – 64, second round, Old Waverly Golf Club, West Point, Miss., 1999.

Becky Iverson – 64, second round, Old Waverly Golf Club, West Point, Miss., 1999.

• Choi, 24, was the LPGA’s leading money winner in 2010 and also winner of the Vare Trophy for low scoring average. She’s a five-time LPGA winner with seven KLPGA titles, but she is seeking her first major championship.

• Choi starts the final round with a six-shot lead. Nobody has come from more than five shots behind in the final round to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

• Choi’s ball striking and putting are setting her apart. Through 54 holes, nobody has hit more greens in regulation (44/54). She’s tied for sixth in putts per green in regulation.

• If Choi wins, she will be the fourth South Korean in the last five years to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

• If Choi wins, South Koreans will be 2 for 2 at Blackwolf Run. Se Ri Pak famously inspired her homeland winning here in ’98.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Here is everything You Oughta Know going into the final round of The Greenbrier Classic:

• Webb Simpson enters the final 18 holes with a chance to win his fourth PGA Tour title in the past 12 months, which would give him the more official victories during that period than any other player.

• In last year’s edition of The Greenbrier, Simpson entered the final round in a share of third place, only to post an even-par 70 and finish T-9.

• Since then, Simpson has 12 top-10 finishes in 24 events, the most top-10s of any player during that time. This year, he has made 14 cuts in 16 starts this season, with five top-10 finishes.

• This marks the fourth time Simpson has held at least a share of a 54-hole lead. Of the previous three, the only one which resulted in victory was last year’s Wyndham Championship.

• Simpson is trying to become the first player to claim a PGA Tour victory after winning a major since Rory McIlroy, who followed last year’s U.S. Open win with one at this year’s Honda Classic.

• Troy Kelly is in sole possession of second place entering the final round. Kelly is making his 34^thstart on the PGA Tour this week, and remains in search of his first top-20 finish. To date, his best finish has been at T-37 at this year’s Mayakoba Golf Classic.

• World Golf Hall of Fame member Tom Watson is playing in his 603^rd official PGA Tour event. This week marks his 496^th made cut.

• At 62, Watson is five years shy of Sam Snead’s record as the oldest player to make the cut in a PGA Tour event. Coincidentally, they are the only two men to have served as golf pro emeritus at The Greenbrier. – Jason Sobel
