GolfNow Northern California

Even a self-proclaimed “East Coaster” like me is willing to admit that Northern California is really something special. I expected a little change of terrain, but what I found was so much more. One thing I can guarantee you about this golf destination is that there simply isn't a dull visual moment. It's just a beautiful place. Southern California is iconic for L.A., film production and famous faces, but head North, and you'll find something more.

As for the courses, they were absolutely stunning, packed with challenging holes and saturated in a love for the history of the game. My favorite was probably Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco. Not only was it filled with one breathtaking view after another, but I was introduced to it by former USGA President Sandy Tatum. He painted a picture for us of exactly why he braved the challenge of renovating a course that had gone from being a PGA Tour stop, to a parking lot, to what it is today—a must-play course. We all have Sandy to thank for this NoCal experience, and his emotional talk with me about the steps that were taken in the name of the Community made it a great way to kick off my trip.

As far as guests, this show was jam packed with true celebrities! Football legend and dancing machine Jerry Rice showed us how he's tackling the gentleman’s game, and Big Wave Surfer Jeff Clark gave me a more, let's say, 'feasible' lesson out on the water. This experience was incredible.

The must do in Northern California

Wrap up a great day of golf on the breathtaking 18th hole at Ritz Carlton's Half Moon Bay Golf Links. Then order a 'S’mores kit' and roast up one great dessert, while overlooking that beautiful 18th hole and the crashing waves, and drinking a glass of wine from Far Niente Winery. How's that for an experience?

 Best time to go

I have heard that August, September and October are the best months to make your way to the area.

My guest list

Anything involving Napa Valley equals a pretty romantic kind of trip. I would bring your main squeeze. Aw, how sweet...
