Conover survives to defend Senior Palmer crown

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Clifford Conover struggled to a 10-over-par 82 Friday on the World Golf Village Slammer & Squire course, but it was enough for him to secure his second consecutive Golf Channel Amateur Tour Senior National Championship in the Senior Palmer Flight [handicap 4.0-7.9]

Conover, a 53-year-old from Roosevelt, Utah, edged Jim Hicks (79) by one. He finished at 23-over-par 311.

Conover led by three over Hicks with three to play, but double-bogeyed the par-5 16th while Hicks made birdie. Even with two to play, Conover regained a one-stroke advantage when he bogeyed the par-4 17th and Hicks made double. Both men bogeyed the final hole.
