When asked about Luke Donald’s comments that the European Tour needs to work to make sure that the DP World Tour Championship is not anti-climatic in 2013, Miceli said that this is very similar to what happened when Vijay Singh won the 2008 FedExCup before the TOUR Championship even began. The PGA TOUR responded by changing the system so the idea of changing the season-ending system is nothing new.
Miceli doubts that the European Tour will attempt to duplicate the FedExCup system if they decide to change their season-ending format. One reason why is because the WGC-HSBC Champions is not open to a majority of the players who would qualify for the DP World Tour Championship.
The Middle East Swing in January and February is a big deal for U.S. and European players alike and as a result, some of the biggest names in golf will not show up for early PGA TOUR events like the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and the Humana Challenge. The amount of money being offered to the world’s best in the Middle East is very attractive and as a result, you will continue to see many players travel to the Middle East and then take a few weeks off which will weaken the West Coast Swing on the PGA TOUR.
Miceli is a bit disappointed in Rory McIlroy talking about how tired he is when he arrives at tournaments late in the season around the world. One of the things that he has always respected about Tiger Woods is the fact that Tiger never complained about fatigue when he showed up for a tournament. McIlroy is still learning how to be World #1 and he has also chosen to spend significant amounts of time travelling around the world for tournaments and for his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy is still young and Miceli is confident that the current World #1 will learn how to manage his schedule in a more efficient way.
