Tiger Woods has been living in Jupiter, FL for the past several months and he has been hearing great things about Tiger from the Jupiter-Hobe Sound community. Tiger seems to be very comfortable and relaxed in the Jupiter area and Tiger sightings are becoming more frequent in which he is more relaxed in those settings as he is interacting with people there. He has spoken with Tiger recently via e-mail about life in Jupiter and Tiger has talked about taking his kids shopping in town and taking them to and picking them up from school. Tim has a feeling that we will see more play like what Tiger displayed at Chevron in late 2011 in 2012.
Gary Woodland has a new agent in Mark Steinberg and now he has a new golf coach in Butch Harmon. The change in golf coaches was made after Woodland switched agents because his former agent is the son of his now former golf coach. Woodland joins a stable of players in Butch Harmon’s group that includes Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson, and Dustin Johnson.
Phil Mickelson will make his first Humana Challenge appearance in five years next week and Butch recently spent some time with Phil in Scottsdale, AZ and says that he saw a new Phil Mickelson there. Mickelson is excited about the New Year and he is hitting the ball very well. He is also trying to rely more on feel than mechanics when it comes to his putting after a 2011 in which he struggled on the greens. Mickelson’s return to the Humana Challenge is great news for everyone and is evidence of the influence of Former President Bill Clinton. It will be interesting to see how Phil plays in his 2012 worldwide debut next week.
Steve Marino is trying to get into better shape in 2012 and he is now working with Claude Harmon III as his swing coach. Harmon III is the son of Butch Harmon and the grandson of 1948 Masters Champion Claude Harmon. Marino has been going to Harmon III’s facility to not only get into better shape but also improve his swing. In the past, Marino has not really had a swing coach and he is taking this step to try to earn his first win on the 2012 PGA TOUR. Marino is thinner after having knee surgery and he is out at the Sony Open with a tighter swing.
Webb Simpson had a great 2011 after preparing a lot in the gym in the time after the 2010 season. Tim said that Simpson may be the Tim Tebow of the PGA TOUR and is a lot tougher than people may initially think. As a result, people should not be surprised if Simpson makes a run at Steve Stricker in the final round at Kapalua.
Martin Laird, who won the 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational, is tied for 2nd after 54 holes at Kapalua. He is from Scotland and went to Colorado State for college. Laird is a former rugby player and he has taken some of that rugby determination onto the golf course. Tim does not think that Martin Laird will be on the 2012 Ryder Cup team despite all of his talent and that fact proves that the eligible players for the European team are incredibly strong and incredibly talented.
