Tom Lehman won the 2011 Regions Tradition on his way to the Charles Schwab Cup Points title on the Champions Tour. When Nicklaus, Palmer, and Player played together in Houston on Saturday, it was a wonderful moment for everyone at The Woodlands Country Club and countless players went out to watch them after they finished their second rounds. You do not get to see them together too often anymore so you try to take advantage of such an opportunity.
He is very happy for all of the players who are being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame tonight. Lehman said that he is not sure if he has done enough to earn induction although he has accomplished a lot in his career. When asked about revisions to the induction criteria, Lehman admitted that he had not thought a lot about it but if pressed on it, he would say that players should be inducted on a case by case basis and age should certainly be considered.
Rickie Fowler is a very appealing player and his own 6-year-old son wears a Puma hat like the kind that Rickie wears. When he thinks about Rickie as a player and as a person, Lehman said that he is very impressed with Rickie because he is not only a great player with a great work ethic, he is also a nice person with a great sense of respect for and politeness towards his elders. You do not see those qualities in people Rickie’s age that often anymore so whenever you encounter someone like Rickie it is a great thing.
Seve Ballesteros passed away one year ago today and when he thinks about Seve, Lehman said that he remembers how kind he was to he and his wife over the years. As competitive and intense as he could be on the golf course, Seve was incredibly generous and kind off the course and was never above reaching out to other players and offering advice. Lehman feels very fortunate that Seve was nice enough to reach out to him and offer him advice which would help him become a better player. He has heard the descriptions of Seve as an artist and while he agrees, he thinks that Seve was very much like Arnold Palmer for the European Tour.
The Regions Tradition has a great history on the Champions Tour and Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Alabama is the perfect home for this tournament. All of the people in the city and at the Club are wonderful and it is inspiring to see all of the charities that benefit from the Regions Tradition. When he played there and won in 2011, Lehman said that he felt very much at home on that course.
