“The most unbelievably gutsy shot I've ever seen." – Jack Nicklaus, on Tiger Woods' chip-in birdie at the par-3 16th in the final round of the Memorial Tournament.
''To do it here, Jack watching on the last hole ... he means a lot to all of us as players. We all looked up to him, and he's the greatest champion that's ever lived.'' – Tiger Woods, on winning the Memorial Tournament and tying course host Nicklaus’ record for second on the all-time PGA Tour win list with No. 73.
"A car chased me. Angie was driving. She had to pull over. I switched to driving so I could drive through someone's yard if I had to. But we had to drive away from our house, the house we rented. We drove for 37 minutes." – Bubba Watson, on his family being chased after hosting a charity concert event while in Ohio at the Memorial Tournament.
"There is no way in the world you could have a tournament police that policy. What do you want, the Gestapo out there? It's kind of ridiculous. You've got 30,000, 40,000 people out there. How are going to go out there and do that? That's crazy, you can't do that.'' – Nicklaus, again, on enforcing the cell phone camera policy on the PGA Tour, which came under fire this week after speculation arose that fans with mobile devices may have lead to Phil Mickelson’s withdrawal from the Memorial Tournament.
"This is in the computer age, kids want to do things in two-and-a-half, three hours at dead max. … The game for the average golfer needs to be faster, take less time, needs to be cheaper, and needs to be easier. Those are contradictory to the Tour." – Nicklaus, again, on the recent focus of players and officials on the slow pace of play on the PGA Tour.
"I was probably five." – Phil Mickelson, when asked to recall the last time he played seven holes in 7 over, including scores of 5 on each of the last six of the day. He withdrew after carding a 79 in the first round of the Memorial Tounament.
"Growing up, the Padres were my team and still are. I always had a love for the team. Where I want to get involved is I want to get a personal involvement with the players and the community.'' – Mickelson, again, on joining a group interested in buying the San Diego Padres.
"I don't feel like the scores are actually reflecting how I'm hitting the ball. I was able to string nine good holes together yesterday. I just need to keep working on it and try and string 18 good holes together and then try and string two days together and obviously three days and ultimately four." – Rory McIlroy, after missing his third straight cut of the season at the Memorial Tournament.
"As far as doing it, you know, we’ve got a lot of players doing it. It’s just that he’s Tiger Woods, so if he does it, everybody’s eyes are on him. It doesn’t bother me. People like that stuff today. I don’t think it’s much different from Stewart Cink being on Twitter all the time."– Tim Finchem, on Tiger Woods’ decision to forgo traditional media in an attempt to connect with his fans through social media.
"I’m going to help Davis out like (the PGA Tour) just asked me to help (International Presidents Cup captain Nick Price) out. I’m going to talk to Davis a little bit. I don’t know if he’s picking me as an assistant captain or not. I’ll help Davis as much as I can." – Fred Couples, on what his role will be on the upcoming Ryder Cup team. Couples was named the U.S. Presidents Cup captain for the third time this week.
"I wasn’t joking. People have been coming up to me to ask about (the comment) and I’ve been telling them that I meant what I said. To be honest, I get fed up with those who sit on the fence." – Famed British golf coach Pete Cowen, not backing off his opinion that Europe’s "B" team could beat the Americans this fall in the Ryder Cup at Medinah.
