Kyndall Ardoin, 16, shot a 1 under and Kay Daniel shot a 2-over 74 to lead Louisiana, which leads North Carolina and Tennessee by just one stroke. Julie Harrison's 78 was not counted for Louisiana, as only the top two scores from each three-member team counts towards the total.
'It's great,' said Daniel, whose team's best finish in this event was eighth place. 'I know it's by far the best Louisiana start.'
Dawn Woodard shot a first-round low 4-under 68 to lead Tennessee, but the next best score for her state was a 78 posted by Shelley Anderson. Holy Cantwell's 80 was discarded.
North Carolina was led by Patty Moore's 71 and Maggie Weder's 75. Angela Stewart shot a 79.
The team from Florida is at 3 over. Alabama, Arizona and Massachusetts are at 5 over.
Defending champion Georgia has a lot of catching up to do. The team is at 13 over.
The second round of this 54-hole event continues on Wednesday.
