Across the country, American flags waved, cans of beer cracked and barefooted families frolicked along the beaches from sea to shining sea. Memorial Day ushered in the week at Muirfield Village and in the golf world the honor was not only given on tee boxes, but to those who serve this great country. From “thank yous” for our soldiers to golf news on another one of America’s great pastimes, here’s what’s hot on our list this week as we usher in…wait for it….SUMMER!
TaylorMade – Want to crush it like Dustin Johnson? We can’t help you there. But we can get you his gear, which is worthy of the hot list this week as both DJ and TaylorMade honor Memorial Day and wounded veterans.
The company released limited edition Stars and Stripes hats and headcovers, available on their website.
TaylorMade will donate $5 per hat and $10 per headcover sold towards rehabilitating combat-wounded veterans through golf. Donations will go to Salute Military Golf Association and Operation Game On. It’s hot to show your patriotism all year long, but remember July 4 is just around the corner as well.
Google Plus – Tiger Woods follows Obama’s lead taking to the new technology to live chat with fans this week in advance of the Memorial Tournament. We’re not such big fans of cutting out the media pre-tournament, but we are fans of Tiger connecting more with his fans. He’s challenging the old guard way of doing things and there is certainly something to be said for going against the grain (even or maybe especially when it’s Tiger). He trail blazed the modern game in so many ways and this is an interesting extension of his influence.
San Diego Padres – So what do baseball and golf have in common, other than being shared passions of many a MLB pitcher? How about a Phil Mickelson? The Padres may soon have a new owner. Mickelson has joined one of five groups trying to buy the team from John Moores.
"It’s something I’ve loved since I was a kid,” said Mickelson.
As for his role, it wouldn’t be day-to-day operations or running the organization.
"I want to have a personal relationship with the players and find ways to get them tied to the community, things of that nature."
Presidents Cup – Fred Couples returns in 2013 and Nick Price relieves Greg Norman of his two-time burden of trying to beat the Americans. The American vs. International team competition gets an additional boost this week in the headlines as Muirfield Village, site of this week’s PGA Tour stop, also hosts the Presidents Cup in 2015, making it the only venue to host a Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, and Presidents Cup.
Bubba golf – Bubba Watson returns to action this week with talk about having his own "Bubba School of Golf." No question this would be unique, but is he serious? According to Bubba, it would consist of a building where he could invite customers to "hit balls and just practice."
"That's all I'd tell them," he said. "And then I'd ask for my money."
Head (and shoulder) Doctors – Luke Donald is giving Dave Alred a lot of love this week following his win at Wentworth.
Who is Dave Alred? He’s a performance coach and sports psychologist who Donald says has helped him become aware of his posture and “how I outwardly project that feeling of positiveness."
Obviously it’s working for him.
"He's certainly always on at me again about keeping the shoulders back and not getting down on myself, staying positive not just mentally but physically and through my body position," Donald said of Alred. "It helps me send that message to whoever I'm playing with.”
Now if only Alred can help Donald get that elusive major.
Paul Lawrie – Congrats to the 1999 British Open Champion who picked up his sixth top-10 finish this year (includes a win in Qatar), with his runner-up finish to Luke Donald last week in Wentworth. It means he is close to sealing the deal on a second Ryder Cup berth, his first in ’99 after his major victory.
Ironically (or not) he is paired in the first two rounds in this week’s Wales Open (at Celtic Manor, site of the 2010 European Ryder Cup victory) with Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal.
"I've never hidden the fact, this year the Ryder Cup is really the only big thing I am interested in doing,” said Lawrie. “I would love to play in that team."
Milkshakes – I’m told the milkshakes served in the men’s grill at Muirfield Village are the best around. I’m going to take everyone’s word for it as long as I get one soon. Bubba apparently likes the birthday cake milkshake flavor. Seriously? Yes please!
