PGA Championship 2025, Round 3 recap: Scottie Scheffler storms to three-shot lead at Quail Hollow

Scheffler is seeking his third major title and first Wanamaker Trophy.

Round 3 highlights from the PGA Championship
Relive the best moments from third-round action of the PGA Championship from Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Scottie Scheffler was at his Scottie Scheffler best Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The world No. 1 played his final five holes in 5 under to turn a claustrophobic leaderboard into a three-shot cushion entering the final round of the 107th PGA Championship.

The day began later than scheduled because of dangerous weather in the area, but the only threat in evening was that of a Scheffler runaway.

Here’s how the third-round played out at Quail Hollow Club:

The look of a man who played with Scottie Scheffler Saturday

We’re done for the day ...

Is the championship over as well?

Jhonattan Vegas, who led after each of the first two rounds, bogeys his final hole to shoot 73 and finish at 6 under. He’s in a group five back of leader Scottie Scheffler.

What a Saturday close by Scheffler

Scheffler birdies the 18th hole to go 5 under over his final five holes. He moves three shots clear of the field entering the final round.

Scheffler shoots 6-under 65 to reach 11 under par through 54 holes at Quail Hollow.

Tough day for Max Homa

He makes one birdie in a 5-over 76 to finish at even par.

Mundane 72 for McIlroy

The Masters champ enters the final round of the PGA Championship mired near the bottom at 2 over.

Family time was fun, but now a major is on the line for Noren
Alex Noren’s expectations for this week’s PGA Championship were understandably low considering his record this season.

After a poor birdie putt on the 16th, Scheffler drains one dead-center at the par-3 17th. He’s now at 10 under and two clear of second place.

Costly tee shot for Vegas

One off the pace, Jhonattan Vegas hooks his tee shot into the water on the par-5 15th. He makes bogey and is now two back of Scheffler, leaving Alex Noren and Matthieu Pavon in second.

Tough finish for Bryson

After grabbing the outright lead at 8 under, DeChambeau bogeys 16, doubles 17 and saves par at 18 for a 2-under 69. He’s in at 5 under, four back of Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler pulls one clear

The world No. 1 follows his eagle at the 14th with a birdie at the par-5 15th. He’s the solo leader at 9 under.

Eagle-2 for Scheffler

Coming off bogey at the 13th, Scheffler hits his tee shot on the short par-4 14th to 3 feet and makes eagle. He’s again a co-leader, tied with Alex Noren at 8 under.

Alex Noren posts 8 under

Returning from injury and making just his second start of the year, Noren birdies four of his final five holes to shoot 66 and grab the clubhouse lead.

Scheffler and DeChambeau slip from the top

Co-leaders, Scheffler bogeys the 13th while DeChambeau hits his tee shot into the water at the par-3 17th and makes double.

It’s now Alex Noren, Jhonattan Vegas and Davis Riley at the top.

Jon Rahm in the house with a 67

Rahm birdies Nos. 14-16, bogeys the 17th and pars the 18th to finish his day at 7 under par.

Seeking the third leg of the career Grand Slam, the Spaniard is one off the current lead.

Bryson DeChambeau grabs solo lead

DeChambeau fires a 5-wood from the rough into the greenside bunker at the par-5 15th. He gets up and down from there for his fifth birdie of the day to reach 8 under, one clear of Davis Riley and Jhonattan Vegas.

Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, bogeys the 11th after a poor drive and is now two back.

Davis Riley takes Jon Rahm’s spot as a co-leader. Riley birdies the 15th while Rahm bogeys the 17th.

Scheffler misses; DeChambeau makes

Moments after Scottie Scheffler misses a 5-footer for birdie at the 10th to take the outright lead, Bryson DeChambeau makes a 5-footer for birdie at the 14th to join the group at 7 under.

Jon Rahm shares the lead

Rahm makes his third consecutive birdie at the 16th and ties Scottie Scheffler and Jhonattan Vegas for the lead. Bryson DeChambeau is one back.

We have ourselves a leaderboard.

DeChambeau is mashing the ball on the back nine at Quail Hollow but hasn’t yet made a birdie. Still, he’s one off the lead.

Rahm one back entering ‘Green Mile’

The two-time major champion birdies the 15th to get to 6 under, one off the lead, as he enters Quail Hollow’s difficult three-hole finishing stretch.

Short miss for the outright lead

Jhonattan Vegas had 3 feet for birdie and the lead at the par-4 eighth, but — much like he did with his bogey putt on the 18th hole Friday — missed.

Scheffler can’t take advantage of massive break

Going for the green off the tee on the short par-4 eighth, Scheffler slices his drive into the right trees — only to have his ball deflect safely into the fairway. He can’t get up and down from there, however, and settles for par.

He remains tied with Si Woo Kim and, now, Jhonattan Vegas at 7 under.

Scottie Scheffler co-leads

Scheffler birdies the par-5 seventh, his third birdie in four holes, to tie Si Woo Kim at 7 under par.

Bryson DeChambeau and Jhonattan Vegas are at 6 under.

Scottie’s at -6, Bryson’s at -6

Scheffler has back-to-back birdies on the front and DeChambeau has made the turn in 3-under 32. Both are one off Si Woo Kim’s lead.

PGA releases statement regarding driver testing
After initially providing no comment on a report that Rory McIlroy’s driver had been deemed non-conforming during a USGA test of the club on Tuesday ahead of the PGA Championship, the PGA of America released a statement on Saturday.

Rahm makes birdie, hits fan in the head

The two actions weren’t connected, however. After a birdie at the par-5 10th to reach 5 under, Rahm’s approach on the par-4 11th struck a fan in the head and ricocheted across the other side of the green.

Si Woo Kim, solo leader

Scheffler within one (stroke and foot)

Scottie Scheffler nearly aces the par-3 fourth to get back to 5 under, one back.

With two two birdies and an eagle through his first six holes, Maverick McNealy is at 4 under and two back.

Starting on the 10th, he hit his tee shot to 2 feet on the par-4 14th and followed that with birdie at No. 15.

Twenty-six players are currently leading or within three shots of the lead.

Four-way tie for the lead

Jhonattan Vegas was at 10 under and four clear of the field Friday. He doubled his final hole of Round 2 and has started bogey-bogey in Round 3.

That’s created a logjam at the top:

T-1. Vegas, -6 (2)
T-1. Pavon, -6 (2)
T1. Fitzpatrick, -6 (2)
T1. S.W. Kim, -6 (2)

Vegas bogeys the first

A poor tee shot leads to a dropped shot. He’s now at 7 under and is up one.

Also, it is wiiiiiindy out there.

Rahm bounces back from bogey

After dropping his first shot of the day at No. 6, Rahm birdies the seventh to get back to 4 under and four off the lead.

Misfires from Scheffler and Homa

Both hit the fairway, both missed the green, both made bogey at the first.

The Scheffler group is on the course

The penultimate group of Scottie Scheffler (-5), Si Woo Kim (-6) and Max Homa (-5) have teed off. One group remains.

Wallace with the bunker hole-out for eagle

DeChambeau picks up a shot at the first to reach 4 under, which is where fellow LIV’er Jon Rahm is at after two early birdies.

Bryson’s round is underway

He begins at 3 under, five back.

Hovland from off the green

He’s within five at 3 under.

PGA of America officials adjusted tee times Saturday because of dangerous weather in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area.

Difference between first and last

There is only a nine-shot difference separating first place and last, following the cut, and only a seven-shot difference between T-2 and last.

With further softened conditions, we could see someone make a big move up the board Saturday.

Rory has re-arrived at Quail Hollow

He’s got his gym gear on now, instead of his work attire. McIlroy was originally scheduled to tee off at 8:25 a.m. EDT but with the delay, he’s now out at 1:38 p.m. off the 10th tee.

And we’re off ...

The third round of the 107th PGA Championship is underway at Quail Hollow.

A reminder on where things stand
Jhonattan Vegas maintained his lead at the PGA Championship, where he’s two shots clear of the field after a 1-under 70 Friday at Quail Hollow.

Weather forecast for afternoon and Sunday

Looks like we are good — if still soggy — the rest of the way.

Some major scrambling going on

The start to Round 3 was moved back 3 1/2 hours, but with the change to threesomes off split tees, that really altered the start times for those near the bottom of the board.
