The PGA Tour’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards may still hang in the balance, the release of the ballots delayed two weeks until after the WGC-HSBC Champions, but one decision Tour types won’t be making is who will be the Comeback Player of the Year.
A Tour official confirmed on Tuesday that the year-ending award ballots will not include candidates for the Comeback award. It will mark the second time in three years the Tour has not named a Comeback Player of the Year.
In 2009 the Tour didn’t issue the award after Steve Stricker won in consecutive years (2006-07) and Dudley Hart claimed the honor in 2008. Stuart Appleby won the award last year.
Depending on how Stricker, who has been slowed this fall by a neck ailment, performs at this month’s Presidents Cup, GTC would humbly suggest a hat trick for the Wisconsin native. And while the Tour is at it they should consider renaming the award the “Steve Stricker Trophy.”
