Cristie Kerr said this week she was not happy to lose the title of highest-ranked American to Stacy Lewis. She responded on Thursday by getting into contention in the first round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship.

Kerr shot 2-under 70 at Locust Hill CC to trail Beatriz Recari, Giulia Sergas and Ryann O’Toole by a shot in the LPGA’s second major of the year.

Kerr is joined by Se Ri Pak, Paula Creamer, Ai Miyazato, Jeong Jang, Mika Miyazato and Na Yeon Choi one behind the lead. Pak returned to the LPGA this week after announcing in April she would be taking a protracted absence with a shoulder injury.

Another six players trail by two shots at 1 under, including Suzann Pettersen, Candie Kung and Sandra Gal.

Tiger Woods’ niece, Cheyenne Woods, opened her professional career with a 3-over 75 to trail by six shots.
