SANDWICH, England – Two of the week’s main characters here at the Open Championship have the surname Watson.
Bubba Watson has received warm applause at Royal St. George’s despite comments two weeks ago in France that were less than pleasing to European Tour golf. Still, he’s shot 69-72 and is 1 over for the championship.
On the other side of the spectrum is Tom Watson, a five-time winner of this championship. He’s thrilled the galleries in Europe since he first played, and won, the Open in 1975 at Carnoustie. Friday he brought great joy to the people once again when he aced the par-3 sixth hole. The elder Watson shot 72-70, is 2 over and will play the weekend.
Here is the tale of the two Watson’s from historic Royal St. George’s:
Bubba’s real name is Gerry. Tom’s real name is … Tom.
Bubba is 32. Tom is 61.
Bubba is in a band called the Golf Boys. Tom plays golf with boys who are named after him.
Bubba has played in three Open Championships. Tom has played in 34.
Bubba made his first cut in the Open Championship. Tom made his 24th.
Tom aced the par-3 sixth hole with a 4-iron from 178 yards. Bubba did not – nor did he ace French history.
