Bill Haas denied Phil Mickelson his second consecutive win with a birdie on the second hole of sudden death to win the Northern Trust Open. Haas drained a 40-foot putt at the drivable par-4 10th hole to defeat Mickelson and Keegan Bradley.
After all three players made par on the first playoff hole at the 18th, then tried their hand at the drivable par-4 10th. None hit the green, though Haas had the best angle. He played safe - and for par - but sank the unlikely birdie putt. Mickelson failed to hole out from a greenside bunker, while Bradley missed a 10-foot putt from back of the green to extend the playoff.
Haas carded a final round of 2-under 69 to force Mickelson and Bradley to make birdie at the 72nd hole. Each did, the seventh and eighth birdies of the day at the closing hole, to make a three-man playoff.
Sergio Garcia shot 7-under 64 on Sunday to improve 45 places into a tie for fourth. He was joined by Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker and Aussie Jarrod Lyle.
Bo Van Pelt, J.B. Holmes and Jonathan Byrd finished T-8 at 4 under. Byrd was the only player among the top 10 to finish over par on Sunday.
The win is Haas’ fourth in his career and marks three consecutive years with a PGA Tour win.
