PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Phil Mickelson exacted some revenge at the 13th hole Friday at The Players Championship.
A day after he fumed over the hole’s design making a double bogey, he bounced back with a birdie.
Mickelson’s got more than a keen interest in design. He’s got his own business, Phil Mickelson Design. He designed Whisper Rock in Arizona.
On Thursday, Mickelson hit an 8-iron at the 181-yard 13th hole, reaching the front-center of the green. His ball, however, didn’t carry far enough and caught a slope, turning left before racing down into the water.
“I don’t know if that’s setup or design, but I just don’t agree with it,” Mickelson said. “I thought the question was would it stay up on top and be by the hole or was it going to roll down in the low area. I didn’t know it could possibly go in the water.
“I think when I design golf courses, I try not to screw the players like that. I try to keep it a little bit fair.”
The hole was cut front-right on Thursday. It was back-left on Friday. Mickelson stiffed his second-round shot to 12 feet and made the birdie putt.
