ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Phil Mickelson said it was special seeing the 6-iron he used to make his memorable escape from the trees while winning the Masters two years ago in his Hall of Fame exhibit Monday before the induction ceremony.
“Hey, I’ve got a 7-iron [here] that’s not bad, either,” fellow inductee Sandy Lyle chimed in during their news conference before the ceremony.
Also part of the exhibit is that 7-iron Lyle used to escape a fairway bunker and set up his winning birdie at the 72nd hole of his Masters victory in 1988. So is the kilt the Scotsman wore hosting his first Masters champions dinner a year later.
“It has got that wow factor,” Lyle said of all the Hall of Fame exhibits.
Hollis Stacy, Dan Jenkins and Peter Alliss all offered mementos for their exhibits as the Hall of Fame’s 2012 class of inductees.
Stacy, who won four majors, three of them U.S. Women’s Opens, provided the first metal woods used to win a major.
Jenkins, the writer/author, offered up a typewriter as part of his exhibit, as well as a personal letter written to him by Ben Hogan.
Alliss’ exhibit included one of his Ryder Cup golf bags.
