SAN FRANCISCO – U.S. Open co-leader Graeme McDowell was impressed by the reception he received from the San Francisco gallery Saturday during the third round at The Olympic Club. It made him feel right at home. Literally.
“I’ve got great support out here in San Francisco,” McDowell said Saturday after shooting a third-round 68 to share the lead with Jim Furyk. “There might be more Irish men out here than there are in Ireland.”
McDowell got himself into a bit of a pickle with his response and was then asked to share instances where he felt the gallery acted particularly Irish.
“Plenty of reference to Guinness and pints,” McDowell quipped. “People are stereotyping me. Kind of under some illusion I like a cold beer.
“Johnny Foley (Irish Pub) is in town. Perhaps I might have a couple of cold Guinness in there tomorrow night if all goes well. And if it doesn’t go well, probably do the same thing.”
