Norman to play in new Hawaii Champions event

Greg Norman has not made a Champions Tour start since September 2009, but will this September when he plays in the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

The Champions Tour announced Sunday the creation of the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship, a 54-hole event to be played on Oahu at Kapolei Golf Course from Sept. 14-16. The event will feature a $1.8 million purse and an 81-player field.

Norman is a representative for title sponsor Pacific Links Hawaii.

The Australian has made two starts this year, both coming on the PGA Tour at the Humana Challenge and Mayakoba Golf Classic. Norman played at the former Hope at the suggestion of friend and former president Bill Clinton. He designed the host course at the Riviera Maya event.

Norman finished T-46 in his last Champions Tour start at the Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.

The creation of the event will give the Champions Tour a pair of official Hawaiian events on its schedule in 2012 and help to fill a month-long gap on the tour’s schedule, which previously had no September events.
