Watney has chance for first win of season at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a 2011 season that included two victories, Nick Watney’s 2012 has lacked the same luster. That may all change at the Wells Fargo Championship this week.

After rounds of 68-64, Watney leads the field through 36 holes and is in contention for the first time this year. Prior to arriving at Quail Hollow, Watney hadn’t broken 70 in his previous nine starts.

“I hit the ball probably the best I have all year,” Watney said. “I putted well and I’m very, very pleased.”

Watney’s 64 was highlighted by a 41-foot putt he made for eagle at the par-5 15th. Additionally, he carded seven birdies and only one bogey.

Other than a T-9 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February, Watney hasn’t had a top 10 this season. He missed the cut last week at the Zurich Classic and feels extra motivation not to let that happen again.

“I think last week was a wake-up call for me and I’ve worked really hard these five days leading into this event,” Watney said. “Who knows what’s going to happen this weekend but I’m really excited for it.”
