Top two-ranked players missing cut not uncommon

Even the world’s top two players get the weekend off sometimes. In fact, it’s happened more in the past few years than you may think.

With Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods each failing to make the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked players on the Official World Golf Ranking will be heading home.

The last time it happened? Not that long ago. It was last year’s U.S. Open, where Luke Donald and McIlroy, the top two, respectively, each missed the cut at The Olympic Club. Prior to that? Donald and Lee Westwood each failed to reach the weekend at the 2011 British Open, which marked the first time since the OWGR was implemented that each of the top ranked players missed the cut at a major.
