Scottie Scheffler didn’t have his best Sunday, but when you’re the best, it can still be good enough.
Scheffler struggled over the front nine in the final round of the 107th PGA Championship, losing an early five-shot lead. Jon Rahm caught Scheffler, but couldn’t hang with him on the back nine.
As Rahm melted down the stretch, Scheffler birdied Nos. 10, 14 and 15 to win his third major title by five.
Scheffler, the overwhelming world No. 1, is now halfway home to the career Grand Slam, adding the Wanamaker Trophy to his two green jackets.
Here’s how the final round played out in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Davis Riley (72) joins Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English in a three-way tie for second.
Poston (73) drops into a tie for fifth.
Recall the 2003 Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow? David Toms led by six on the last and made quadruple-bogey 8 to win by two.
(Don’t think there is any jinxing Scottie Scheffler.)
Big difference between solo second and a four-way T-2.
DeChambeau and English are in at 6 under with J.T. Poston and Davis Riley on the number with one to play.
Once tied for the lead on the back nine, Jon Rahm plays the “Green Mile” in 5 over par. He shoots 2-over 73 and is in a tie for eighth.

Rahm pulls his tee shot into the water on 18, as well.
He’s gone bogey-double bogey on Nos. 16 and 17 to drop to 6 under, six back of Scottie Scheffler. He’s now tied for third with Bryson DeChambeau (70) and Harris English (65).
J.T. Poston at 7 under through 16 is solo second.
Rahm hits his tee shot into the water at the par-3 17th as Scheffler easily birdies the par-5 15th.
Scheffler is now at 12 under and has at least a five-shot lead on the field.
This time, though, it results in a bogey. Rahm’s 12-footer to save par at the 16th snaps hard left at the end and stays out of the cup. He drops three back of Scheffler.
Scheffler hits his tee shot into the greenside bunker at the par-4 14th and, unlike Rahm, gets up and down for birdie. He’s now two up with four to play.

Rahm hit his drive 345 yards and laced a 4-iron from 247 yards that hit the green and ran through. Putting from a valley, his ball drifted 12 feet past the hole and, once again, never gave his birdie putt a chance.
Back-to-back disappointing pars to remain one back.
U.S. captain Keegan Bradley has gone birdie-birdie-eagle, from Nos. 13-15, to reach 5 under par. He’s tied for seventh.

After a 338-yard drive and with only 104 to the hole, Scheffler doesn’t birdie the 12th. His 17-footer dies 2 feet shot and Scheffler stays one up on Rahm.
Rahm’s tee shot on the 330-yard, par-4 14th bounded into the right greenside bunker. He splashed his second to 7 feet but his birdie effort never had a chance. Rahm remains one back.
He’s at 7 under and three back, but now faces the “Green Mile,” which undid him yesterday.
Scheffler’s 13-footer for birdie at the 11th, slips by on the left. He pars and remains one up over Rahm.
The sweeping left-to-right 20-footer clips the side of the cup but won’t fall. It’s a par for Rahm and he remains one back.
He goes up and down from the sand on 10 for birdie, while Rahm misses his birdie putt on 12.

Matt Fitzpatrick makes EAGLE on the 14th to move to 7 under. He’s just two strokes back of Scheffler and Rahm — obviously, though, with a lot less golf to go.

You read that right. He birdies the 11th — his third in four holes — to move to 9 under as Scheffler slides.

WOW. It’s a one-stroke lead for Scottie Scheffler!
Rahm birdies the par-5 10th, and Scheffler bogeys the par-4 9th after another missed fairway. He makes the turn in 2-over 37, his only over-par side of this PGA.
Here. We. Go.

He’s missed five of his last seven fairways.
It may not stick. Sorry — it will not stick. But Harris English can say he was the clubhouse leader at some point on a major Sunday:

Davis Riley bogeys the sixth and triples the seventh. That’ll do it for his chances.
Meanwhile, Jon Rahm birdies the eighth, and at 7 under, he’s suddenly three back of Scheffler.

He’s hungry, too:
Hmmmm...
With a long Bryson DeChambeau birdie putt, EIGHT players are tied for second at 6 under.
There’ll be someone ready to feast if Scottie Scheffler stumbles. That is a massive “if” — but he bogeys the 6th, and his lead is down to four.
He’s 6 under. So are three others. Scheffler is 11 under.
If it’s a race for second, Davis Riley helped his cause with a slam dunk chip for birdie on the fifth.
"Whoa -- on the fly!"

Alex Noren blasts it past the hole from the bunker on the fourth, then two-putts for bogey.
Current leaderboard, with Scottie running away:
1. Scottie Scheffler (-11)
T2. Alex Noren (-6)
T2. Jon Rahm (-6)
T2. Davis Riley (-6)
T2. Harris English (-6)
He’s probably bummed he didn’t make it.

What, were you getting nervous?
He makes birdie on the second, thanks largely to this recovery. His lead is now at four.

Scottie Scheffler’s lead stays at three, but he moves a bit closer to the pack. He and Alex Noren both miss par putts on the first.
Davis Riley and J.T. Poston, though, each bogeyed the first as well. They (and Jon Rahm) are 6 under, Noren 7, Scheffler 10.
And the leader is off.

We will not hear from Rory McIlroy this PGA Championship. He opts not to speak with media after his third over-par round of the weekend.
Bryson DeChambeau will need to go quite low to pull this one off. He crushes his driver to the middle of the fairway to open his final round, but a wayward approach leads to a par. He’s six back.
For the third time this week, Rory McIlroy shoots over par. He closes in 72 to finish at 3 over, T-55 upon completion.

Xander Schauffele concluded his title defense with a birdie at the last. It was his fifth birdie to go along with an eagle-2 at the par-4 eighth, two bogeys and a double at the 16th.
Schauffele’s 68 put him at 1 under for the championship and T-33 when he signed his card.
